Quick Take
The YETI Tundra 45 defined the premium rotomolded cooler; the RTIC 45 QT Ultra Tough copied the formula and cut the price by nearly ninety dollars. Both are rotomolded hard coolers with thick insulation and bear resistant builds. For most buyers the RTIC gets you nearly all of the performance for meaningfully less money.

What We Don’t Like

- RTIC: accessory ecosystem is smaller than YETI's
- Both: heavy when fully loaded, as rotomolded coolers always are

Quality
Both coolers use rotomolded polyethylene shells with thick pressure injected insulation, freezer style lid gaskets, and T style rubber latches: the formula YETI pioneered and RTIC followed closely. The Tundra 45 carries the original’s fit and finish: tight tolerances, the famous T Rex latches, and a non slip base. The RTIC 45 QT Ultra Tough matches the construction closely, with a similar gasket, sturdy latches, and drain system, at the cost of slightly less refined details. In real use both keep ice for days and survive being used as a casting platform or extra seat; the YETI feels a touch more polished, the RTIC feels like ninety percent of the cooler for roughly seventy percent of the money.
Value
At $325 against $239, the gap is eighty six dollars for coolers of the same nominal capacity. YETI asks you to pay for the brand that invented the category, the widest accessory lineup, and the strongest resale value. RTIC asks almost nothing in return for the discount: comparable insulation, comparable toughness, and a warranty that holds up in owner reports. Unless you specifically want YETI accessories or the badge, the RTIC is the better buy and it is not close.
Who Should Buy It
Buy the RTIC if you want premium cooler performance at a sane price. Buy the YETI if you value the brand, accessories, and resale.
Who Should Skip It
Skip both if you only need a cooler twice a year; a basic injection molded cooler costs a fraction of either.
FINAL VERDICT
The winner is the RTIC 45 QT Ultra Tough Cooler. It delivers the rotomolded toughness and multi day ice retention that made the Tundra famous, for eighty six dollars less. The YETI remains the icon, but icons do not keep ice colder; the RTIC is the rational pick.
