Quick Take
The Shaver 5000X is Philips Norelco’s value sweet spot: rotary comfort, wet and dry flexibility and a pop up trimmer for under $90. It will not shave as close as a flagship, but for daily maintenance it is comfortable, fast once you learn the technique, and far kinder to skin than disposables.
What We Like
- Gentle on skin with fewer nicks than a cartridge razor
- Wet and dry use, works with gel or in the shower
- Pop up trimmer handles sideburns and neckline
- USB charging with quick charge for one shave
- Rinses clean under the tap in seconds
What We Don’t Like
- Not as close as a manual razor or a premium foil shaver
- Rotary heads need replacing roughly every year, an ongoing cost
- Takes longer than a manual shave while you learn the technique
- No cleaning station included at this price

Quality
The 5000X uses rotary heads with self sharpening blades that flex to follow facial contours. The build is mostly plastic but solid, with a rubberized grip that stays secure when wet. The heads detach easily for rinsing. It feels like a midrange tool in the best sense: no luxury materials, but everything fits together well and the waterproofing is trustworthy.
Value
At $90 the 5000X sits right where electric shaving starts making sense. It undercuts the Series 7000 and 9000 by a wide margin while keeping the core comfort of a rotary shave. Replacement heads add ongoing cost, but even so it beats buying cartridge refills over a couple of years. The Braun Series 3 is the closest rival and a fine pick, but the Norelco’s wet and dry flexibility gives it the edge for shower shavers.
Who Should Buy It
Buy it if you want to ditch cartridges for something faster, gentler and cheaper over time.
Who Should Skip It
Skip it if you demand the closest possible shave; a safety razor still wins there.
FINAL VERDICT
The 5000X is the electric shaver to buy if you want comfort and convenience without the flagship price. Not the closest shave, but close enough, gentle, and easy to live with. A genuinely smart $90.
