Quick Take

The DW5600E is the direct descendant of the original 1983 G Shock, and it still defines what a tough digital watch should be. Shock resistant resin, 200 meter water resistance and a two year battery come standard. At around $70 it is the cheapest serious tool watch you can buy.

What We Like

  • Legendary shock resistance that shrugs off drops and knocks
  • 200 meter water resistance, good for swimming and snorkeling
  • Backlight, stopwatch, timer and alarms cover every basic function
  • Battery lasts about two years with zero maintenance
  • Lightweight resin case disappears on the wrist

What We Don’t Like

  • Resin case and strap show wear and eventually need replacing
  • Utilitarian looks will not suit dressier outfits
  • The display can wash out under polarized sunglasses
  • The chunky case wears large on smaller wrists

Quality

The DW5600E’s hollow case structure suspends the module inside resin, which is why G Shocks survive drops that kill other watches. The mineral glass crystal sits recessed behind a raised bezel for protection. Everything about the construction is function over form: the resin is light, the screw back case seals out water to 200 meters, and the whole thing weighs about 53 grams.

Value

Few products in any category match this value. The DW5600E costs about the same as a dinner out and delivers decades proven durability, real water resistance and a full feature set. Cheaper digital watches exist but none combine the shock rating, the 200 meter rating and the G Shock name. Spending more gets you solar power or Bluetooth, not more toughness.

Who Should Buy It

Buy it if you want a watch you never have to think about, for the gym, the job site, the trail and everywhere in between.

Who Should Skip It

Skip it if you need a watch that works with a suit or you want modern smart features.

FINAL VERDICT

The DW5600E is the rare product with no meaningful competition at its price. It is not pretty and it is not trying to be. It is simply the toughest seventy dollars in watches, and after forty years on sale, that verdict is settled.
