Quality

Both are compact fabric wrapped spheres and pucks that disappear on a shelf. The Echo Dot is the newer design with a larger 1.73 inch driver, three microphones, and sensors for temperature and motion that enable genuinely useful automations. The Nest Mini is smaller and older, with a 40mm driver and a fabric top made from recycled plastic bottles. Neither feels cheap, and both have mic off switches for the privacy conscious.

Value

Both live at the fifty dollar line and both drop lower constantly during sales, sometimes under thirty. At those prices they are nearly disposable, which is part of the appeal: put one in every room. The Echo Dot gives you more hardware for the money with its sensors and eero extension. The Nest Mini’s value is software: if your life runs on Gmail, Calendar, and Android, Google’s answers are simply better.

You’ll Love It If

First time smart speaker buyers, renters who want cheap multiroom audio, and anyone deep in either the Amazon or Google ecosystem.

Skip It If

Audiophiles should step up to a full size speaker, and the privacy wary may prefer a speaker with a physical camera shutter and mic disconnect.

FINAL VERDICT

Buy the Echo Dot 5th Gen if you want the smarter home: more sensors, more device compatibility, and better sound. Buy the Nest Mini 2nd Gen if you live in Google’s world and value a speaker that actually understands you. Both are excellent for the price, and neither choice is wrong.
