Quick Take

The Steam Deck OLED wins this comparison. Its HDR OLED display makes every game look dramatically better than the Ally X’s LCD, its battery lasts meaningfully longer, and SteamOS delivers a console like experience with instant suspend and resume. The Ally X is faster on paper with its Z1 Extreme chip and 24GB of RAM, and Windows runs everything natively. But for actually enjoying games on a handheld, the Deck’s screen, battery, and simplicity matter more than raw specs.

Loves

  • 7.4 inch HDR OLED at 90Hz looks stunning in person
  • Best in class battery life for a gaming handheld
  • SteamOS suspend and resume is console simple

  • Trackpads make mouse heavy games actually playable

Not For

  • Steam Deck OLED got a $240 price hike in 2026 from memory costs

  • Ally X has the better screen for high refresh competitive games

Quality

How they compare: build and design. The Steam Deck OLED pairs a 7.4 inch 1280×800 HDR OLED with a custom AMD APU, 16GB RAM, and a 50Wh battery, wrapped in a chunky but ergonomic shell with dual trackpads. The Ally X counters with a 7 inch 1080p 120Hz LCD, a faster Ryzen Z1 Extreme, 24GB of LPDDR5X, a 1TB SSD, and an 80Wh battery in a sleeker chassis. The Ally X is the more powerful machine on paper; the Deck is the better designed gaming device in the hand, with a screen that makes games look richer despite the lower resolution.

Value

Price comparison. The Steam Deck OLED 512GB now lists at $789 after Valve’s 2026 memory driven price hike, while the ROG Ally X holds its $799.99 MSRP. The Deck is $11 cheaper with a far better display, and its refurbished units at $629 are the best deal in handheld gaming. The Ally X justifies its price with double the RAM and storage. If Valve ever reverses the price hike, this becomes a rout; as it stands, the Deck still wins on value.

You’ll Love It If

Gamers with big Steam libraries who value display quality, battery life, and a simple pick up and play experience should buy the Steam Deck OLED.

Skip It If

Players who need Game Pass, anti cheat heavy multiplayer, or desktop Windows apps on their handheld should buy the ROG Ally X.

FINAL VERDICT

The Steam Deck OLED is our winner. The OLED screen, superior battery life, and SteamOS polish beat the Ally X’s spec sheet advantage for real world gaming enjoyment. Buy the Ally X if you need native Windows or maximum performance. Everyone else should buy the Deck.
