Quick Take

The Half Dome 2 is REI’s best selling tent for a reason: it is spacious, simple, and nearly indestructible at a fair price. The 45th anniversary update adds meaningful improvements without raising the $299 price. Ultralight hikers should look elsewhere, but everyone else should start here.

Loves

  • Huge interior volume for a 2 person tent with near vertical walls
  • Two doors and two vestibules end midnight crawl overs
  • New HubCheck hub system makes setup nearly foolproof
  • 75 denier fabrics and aluminum poles built for years of use
  • $299 price undercuts most rivals with this much space

Not For

  • At 5 pounds 12 ounces it is heavy for serious backpacking
  • Bulky packed size eats trunk and pack space
  • Rainfly vents need managing to avoid condensation
  • You will want the footprint, which adds cost on some listings

Quality

The 2026 refresh keeps everything people loved and fixes the fiddly bits: color coded poles, a hub with little windows so you can confirm poles are seated, and a closer to the ground rainfly for better storm protection. Fabrics are burly 75 denier polyester, zippers are oversized, and the whole thing pitches taut without guyline wizardry. It feels like gear designed by people who actually camp.

Value

At $299 the Half Dome 2 delivers more livable space per dollar than nearly anything in its class, and REI’s member dividend plus legendary return policy sweeten the deal further. Lighter tents cost twice as much; cheaper tents feel like it. For car camping and first backpacking trips, the value is outstanding.

You’ll Love It If

New campers, festival goers, and couples who want comfort and simplicity over ultralight specs.

Skip It If

Ounce counting thru hikers and anyone who needs a true four season mountaineering shelter.

FINAL VERDICT

This is the tent we recommend to anyone buying their first real shelter. It is roomy, forgiving, and built to last a decade of trips. Buy it, learn on it, and thank us at mile ten.
