Quick Take

The Classic Large is the notebook everyone pictures: black cover, elastic band, ribbon bookmark, pocket in the back. The paper is thin and fountain pen users will see ghosting, but for ballpoints and pencils it is a lovely writing experience. You are partly paying for the myth, and the myth is nice.

What We Like

  • Timeless design with thoughtful details
  • Lies flat and the elastic keeps it shut
  • Huge range of colors and layouts
  • Acid free paper that lasts

What We Don’t Like

  • Thin paper shows ghosting with wet pens
  • Pricey for what is essentially paper
  • Cover scuffs easily with daily carry

Quality

The thread bound spine opens flat, the ivory 70gsm paper is smooth for ballpoints, and the details (ribbon, elastic, expandable pocket) are all executed well. It feels like a designed object rather than a commodity notebook. The cover is sturdy enough for bag life.

Value

Twenty five dollars is a lot for 192 pages, and cheaper notebooks write as well or better. What you buy is the design and the pleasure of the object. If the ritual matters to you, it is worth it.

Who Should Buy It

Buy it if you journal daily and love beautiful stationery.

Who Should Skip It

Skip it if you write with fountain pens or want maximum pages per dollar.

FINAL VERDICT

The Classic Large is not the best notebook on pure specs, but it might be the most satisfying to own. Sometimes the myth is worth the markup.
