Quick Take

The Switch 2, released June 2025, is everything fans asked for: bigger, faster, sharper, and still fully hybrid. The $50 price increase to $499.99 and $80 games are real downsides. But the hardware itself is excellent, and backward compatibility protects your existing library.

What We Like

  • 7.9 inch 1080p HDR screen with 120Hz refresh
  • Magnetic Joy Con 2 controllers snap on securely
  • 4K output when docked to a TV
  • Backward compatible with original Switch games
  • Mouse mode adds precise control for shooters and strategy

What We Don’t Like

  • $50 price hike over the original $449.99 MSRP stings
  • New games now cost up to $80
  • Battery lasts 2 to 6.5 hours depending on the game
  • LCD screen instead of OLED

Quality

The Switch 2 feels like a proper grown up revision: a larger chassis with slimmer bezels, satisfying magnetic controller attachment, and a sturdy kickstand. The 1080p HDR display is a huge leap over the original’s panel, with smoother motion at 120Hz. Docked 4K output finally lets Nintendo games shine on big TVs.

Value

At $499.99 after the September 2026 price increase, the Switch 2 is no longer the budget console it launched as. Still, it undercuts building a gaming PC or buying a PS5 Pro, and the hybrid design remains unique. Factor in $80 first party games when budgeting.

Who Should Buy It

Buy it if you love Nintendo exclusives, play handheld often, or game as a family.

Who Should Skip It

Skip it if you rarely play Nintendo titles or balk at $80 games.

FINAL VERDICT

The Switch 2 earns an 8.5: superb hardware and the best Nintendo exclusives, dimmed by rising prices. If you skipped the original or your launch Switch is aging, this is a worthy upgrade.
